This time of the year, hearts and wallets begin to open and give to charities. There’s just something about the holidays, the shopping, and the smell of the air that puts people in the giving mood. If you are one of those who wants to give to charity this holiday season, here are some ideas for you.

1.    Donate toys. Christmas is all about the children, so naturally people will want to donate toys. You can go to the United Way and ask about a Sub-for-Santa program. Sub-for-Santa donations go to local families, so you can be sure your donation is staying in your community. Toys are always welcome at the United Way since many Sub-for-Santa programs focus on the children.

2.    Donate to the Red Cross. All year long the Red Cross travels around the world to help victims of natural disasters. Your donation could help the Red Cross continue to offer valuable medical expertise in crisis situations.

3.    Donate to a church. Many church groups are in need of money, especially during the holidays. Ask a church in your area if you could help provide meals, volunteer time, or donate money to any holiday-related service projects.

4.    Donate to the Salvation Army. This is an easy one to do because you’ll likely run into one of the Salvation Army’s bell-ringing Santas when you are out shopping. Simply drop a few dollars or even just a few coins into the bucket for a good cause.

5.    Donate to the homeless shelter. There are many people, even in your community, who are going without food and clothing, not to mention any Christmas presents. Donate your time by serving a meal at the homeless shelter or organize a food drive in your neighborhood to collect canned foods.

Every little bit, any time of the year, helps charities in need.
