It’s the time of year when people’s hearts swell and kindness takes over. It’s the holiday season when charities see the most increase in their donations. If you are feeling in the giving spirit, here are the top things charities need the most. Keep these tips in mind as you prepare to donate to your favorite charity.
1. Cash. Charities will always take cash. When you give money, charities are then able to use the funds to buy much needed equipment or supplies. For example, if you donate cash to a youth group, they can buy sports equipment or school books.
2. Helping hands. Many charities don’t want monetary help at all. In fact, what they are most in need of is volunteers. Everyone, no matter their own current economic conditions, has time to give to someone else. Spend some time at the local homeless shelter, help at a local hospital, or even volunteer to help your neighbor with a project. The person you help will be very appreciative, plus you’ll feel really good about yourself when you are finished.
3. Clothing. Donating clothes you no longer wear or coats is always a nice donation as well. You can clean out your closet and give away the clothes you no longer wear to the Salvation Army or Goodwill shop. Coats, gloves, and warm clothing are always appreciated during the winter months.
4. Food. As with clothing, food is an essential item many charities are in need of. Go through your pantry and donate any canned goods you may have on hand. Or you could organize a neighborhood food drive. Find the local homeless shelter or women’s center to give the food to when you are finished.
There are many ways to help charities. If you are strapped for cash, think about other ways that you can help those who are less fortunate.
